Rijkswaterstaat (Dutch road administration) and Koninklijk Horeca Nederland (Dutch Royal Catering Establishment Industry) are to use PADS digital signage software developed by Net Display Systems to decrease traffic jams in the Netherlands. By providing real-time traffic and public transport information to visitors of amusement parks and catering establishments they expect a better dispersal of traffic.
At the moment displays with traffic information are placed at the exit of a large number of amusement parks, zoos, road restaurants and conference centers. In total there will be 200 screens placed across the Netherlands. These displays show the real-time traffic jams and or train delays. When there are traffic jams in the surroundings of the participating locations an interesting alternative can be offered to prolong the visitors stay. For example a ‘rush hour menu' for a special price.
The ‘rush hour menu' has to stimulate visitors to stay longer at the location when there are traffic jams or train delays. This will create a better dispersal of traffic.
'This project is a typical example where digital signage can show its added value' says Arthur Damen, product manager of Net Display Systems. 'By displaying information relevant to a specific location visitors can make a deliberate choice: join the traffic jam or postpone the departure for a while and make use of the offered alternative."
Every location will be monitored from one central place in the Netherlands and managed from a distance. A big part of the content can however also be determined locally. Besides the traffic information they can locally decide to for example display train departure info of the local train station, a page with actual weather information, a service page and/or their own webpage.
The implementation of the PADS software is done by Dutch partner Infoscreens.
