projectiondesign has supplied five of its F22 SX+ projectors to the Port of London Authority for use in its ship bridge simulator. Located at the Gravesend Port Control Centre, south-east London, the simulator is used for routine and refresher training of pilots, removing the need for them to travel elsewhere to gain 'hands-on' experience of the varying tide, wind and visibility conditions of the River Thames.
The Simulator was inaugurated in 2003, upgraded in 2006, and has now been further enhanced. Both installation and upgrade were carried out by Dutch-based visualisation companyPro Systems, working with the project's main contractor Marin, which supplied the set-up's image software and operator console.
Martin van Driest, director of Pro Systems, commented: 'Our 6-axis projector mount, in combination with the projectiondesign projectors, gave us the flexibility needed for the Port of London Authority's simulation environment. We used an angled flat-screen with an image size of 5m, and specified the projectors with wide-angle, short-throw lenses because of the limited space available on the 'Bridge'.'
