[sponsored article] When St Thomas' Church Kendal needed to upgrade their AV facilities recently they called on the experience and expertise of local integrator Audioworks (NW) Ltd; and following an outline of the Church's requirements Audioworks turned to QSC for an audio system solution

The brief for the project was fairly simple, a good sounding solution that would offer excellent coverage and performance whilst remaining sympathetic to the church's interior. Martin Hodgson of Audioworks takes up the story 'Following initial discussions with representatives of St Thomas' we agreed that a Line Array would offer the most complete solution and I proposed the QSC ILA range as a cost effective and aesthetically pleasing option.'

Once the specification had been agreed in principle Martin contacted Shure Distribution (who represent QSC in the UK) for assistance in the final design of the project. 'The team at Shure was really supportive" Martin continues "they accompanied me on a number of site surveys, prepared a technical specification and supplied coverage and SPL plots to support their proposals. They even helped me mock up a demonstration of what the finished system would look and sound like!'

The full specification for the project was based around the ILA (Installation Line Array) range; to provide adequate coverage two hangs of four WL-2082 speakers were required and these were positioned either side of the Chancel. The system was powered with a combination RMX1850 and RMX4050 amplifiers and system processing and EQ by the QSC SC28 System Controller. HPR181i powered Subwoofers were employed to handle the low range frequencies as they could easily be removed when not in use. QSC AD-S82H speakers provide coverage for the Balcony area powered by a GX3 amplifier.

The installation of the new PA passed smoothly and representatives of Shure Distribution were again on hand to help with the fine tuning as the system was commissioned. Martin Hodgson was impressed 'I think the sound quality and coverage is excellent and far more than we initially hoped for with the budgetary constraints we had. The WL-2082 were straightforward to install and position and when it came down to tweaking the ILA the SC28 was very intuitive to use.'

Similarly the customer has been equally impressed. 'One of the key features of the new system is the way it fits in aesthetically with all the other aspects of the church refurbishment" comments Tom Montgomery. 'With the QSC line array speakers, we get a great sound and stunning performance which enables us to present all the events that we manage to the same standard as other professional venues'

'The flexibility of the system coupled with the refurbished space is also perfect for our needs; it's often the case we'll need to facilitate an entire wedding party followed by a concert with 350 audience members, not to mention our regular services of different shapes and sizes. All in all we have a great package that has already been serving us well.'
